Google Author Rank

What is Google Author Rank?

AuthorRank is approximation of author value as measured by the link graph. The algorithm takes into account many factors but primarily:

  • Use of Google Authorship
  • Diversity of sites to which an author contributes
  • Link value of sites to which an author contributes
  • Volume of content produced by author
  • Link value of content produced by author
  • The number of people in their Google+ circles and the strength of their followers’ online presence
  • Social media activity such as +1s, likes, shares and tweets
  • The quantity and quality of comments and two-way engagement with their audience
  • The strength of the online presence of those making comments and interacting
  • The quality, consistency and volume of inbound links to the author’s content
  • The authority of the website and domain on which the author’s content appears (this is where the Author Rank and PageRank metrics will combine as an indicator of quality)

One of the most important features of Google Plus is its authorship system. The idea is that an author can build rank and trust (called Author Rank) based on the content they write all over the web. Google already has a way to determine your expertise at those subjects and it is only getting smarter in how it ranks authors and their content. For instance, if your content is constantly +1’ed and shared, it will be a strong signal that the content you create is of high quality and offers plenty of value.

The more quality content you publish online, the more likely you are to be ranked high by Google and considered an authority in your subject area.

Why Author Rank would never have worked

The problem with the theory behind Author Rank is that authoritative authors tend to write on authoritative sites.

Authors who are well known in a particular field can get published on the biggest sites in their industries with relative ease; and because they’re published on big sites the posts will generally rank well anyway.

Add to this the fact that authors do not become well known in a particular field unless they write great content, and that they know nobody will see their content unless they know where to put it so that people will be able to find it, suddenly it starts to look like Author Rank is a fundamentally broken concept when it comes to content discovery.

    Author Rank in the Future

Although we are only at the beginning stages of Author Rank, Google already has plans to expand the functionality in their ever-evolving effort to reduce spam and increase relevancy.
